Barr ~ Ellis Families

-- My paternal grandparents were Calvin Stoey Graham and Ruth Etta Barr.

Ruth was born to Harvey Joseph Barr and Sarah Henrietta (Sallie) Ellis. Ruth is a 11th generation Barr lineage.

Our grandmother, Ruth Etta Barr, can trace her heritage directly to Melchoir Bär III, and his wife Eva Elizabeth Christman, who settled in Lehigh Valley.

-- Sarah's grandparents were James Ellis and Mary Ann Luxeon, who married September 24th 1836 in St. Austell, Cornwall, England. They left Liverpool, England, on the ship George Thacker, and entered America through the ports of Philadelphia in April 1849.

-- For a short time the Ellis family lived in Shannonsville Lower Providence Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. They then settled in the Pottstown and Boyertown areas of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, and later in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

The Barr Family is one of my earliest families to arrive in Colonial Pennsylvania. Their Barr patriarch arrived in Colonial Philadelphia in 1743 from the Switzerland and Canton of Zurich regions, and later the Palatinate region of Zweibrücken Germany. They would settle in the Lehigh Valley region, and Berks County Pennsylvania.

-- Here are the Barr ~ Ellis research papers, their family directory, where you can view much more information on the family.

--  Then there's the family photos, which is one of our largest collection in the library.

The Barr Families

The Barr name in German was spelled Bär, and is presently written in various forms: Baer, Baehr, Bahr, Bair, Bäre, Bear, and Barr. America colonial records show that over forty immigrants of this name came to America prior to 1750. This short narrative represents interpretations of events and relationships that have been developed through the research of those interested in the Barr family.

The Bär name appears in Swiss history as early as 1245 AD. The family coat of arms is in the possession of American Barr descendants. Swiss settlers began arriving in the Palatinate area of Germany as early as 1671. In 1674, Prince Karl Ludwig, ruler of the Palatinate, offered limited religious liberty to the Swiss in exchange for settling his wasted farmlands and to help restore them to productivity.

The Bär family is said to be from a Palatinate family whose family seat was at Baeren Huette Germany. The Palatinate area of Germany includes the present day cities of Mainz, Kaiserslautern, Coblenz and Trier. Records also suggest that a Peter Von Bär was married to a daughter of the count of the Palatinate. The parish of Bär, the church in which is said to have been built by Emperor Charles in the fifth century, derives its name from the family of Bär.

Most of the information from this family comes from the History of Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, and a Genealogical and Biographical Record of Its Families, Volume 2. In this reference, and other references, our Melchoir Bär III is refered to as Melchoir Bär Jr. So, we decided to suffix the Melchoir Bär name with I, II, III, and so on. This will help represent the number of generations using the name of Melchoir.

Many of the Bär (Barr and Baer) families of Eastern Pennsylvania are descendant of Melchoir Bär II, Johannes, Melchoir III, and Christophel Bär. These men, along with other immigrants, crossed the ocean in the ship "Phoenix", which landed in Philadelphia on September 30th 1743.

The exact relationship between these men is difficult to determine, but the fact is established that they came to America on one ship, settled in the same section of Pennsylvania, spoke the same language, and adhered to the same religious faith. Some researchers think they were brothers, others believe them to be sons of MelchoirBär II, but at the very least they were probably close relatives. It is certain that these men all settled in Eastern Pennsylvania and their descendants' number in the thousands.

i. Melchoir Bär II is the grandson of Hans Ulrich Bär from the Canton Zurich Switzerland region. Melchoir Bär II was born about 1688/89 near, Ottenbach, Canton Zurich, Switzerland, and he immigrated to Colonial Philadelphia from the Palatinate area of Zweibrucken Germany. Melchoir Bär II died on October 2nd 1771 in North Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. He was buried October 4th 1771 at the Schlosser Reform Church, Lehigh County. Many of the Bär - Baer families of Lehigh County are descendant of Melchoir Bär II.

ii. Johannes Bär is credited in being the fore-bearer to most of the Baers of Berks and surrounding counties claim Johannes (John or Hans) Baer as their ancestor. Before 1750 he settled in what is known today as Weisenburg Township Lehigh County PA. He had four children: John, Adam, Jacob, and Barbara (who married Henry Fetter). John moved to Windsor Township, Berks County, and his descendants live in Hamburg, and Windsor, and Perry and Bern Townships.

iii. Christophel Bär, prior to his coming to America, patented 560 acres of land in what is now Whitehall Lehigh County Pennsylvania. The records at Easton show that he was a systematic businessman and possessed of great force of character. He was the great-grandfather of George F. Baer, the distinguished lawyer and railroad president. His family consisted of six children: Heinrich, Melchoir, John, Salome, Apollonia, and Jacob.

iv. Melchoir Bär III, the son of Melchoir Bär II, was born October 2nd 1726 in Ottenbach Canton Zurich, Switzerland. He died February 28th 1773 in Macungie Township Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. He was buried about March 2nd 1773 in Upper Milford Reform Church, Zionsville, Macungie Township Lehigh County, Pennsylvania.

All the records I researched indicate that Johannes, Christophel, and Melchoir III are sons of Melchoir II and his 3rd marriage to Anna Elisabeth Abecky, while another researcher shows Melchoir III as being the son of Melchoir II and his 1st wife Elisabeth Gneser.

Jochim Bär (1558-1634)Families

-- My paternal 10th great grandparents were Jochim Bär and Justina Schoch.

Jochim Bär and his family is our 1st known German ancestor. Jochim was born about 1558 around Canton of Zurich, Switzerland, and died sometime before 1634. Jochim had married twice;

1st marriage was to Justina Schoch who was born about 1558 and died sometime after 1637. Jochim and Justina lived near: Ottenbach, Canton of Zurich, Switzerland.

2nd marriage was to Elisabeth Joss who was born about 1565 and died sometime after 1637. Jochim and Elisabeth had no children

From Jochim's 1st marriage to Justina, they had two children.

i. Adelheit Bär was born about 1597 and died sometime after 1661. Adelheit married Andreas Beeben Jorg who was born about 1600, and his departure is unknown. Adelheit was twice married; 1st to Barbel Buchman, and 2nd to Elisabeth Boch.

ii. Hans Ulrich Bär was born about 1584, and died about 1628. Hans Ulrich Bär was 1st married to Barbel Wyss who was born about 1584 and died about 1617. Hans I then married Barbel Wydler.

Hans Ulrich Bär (1584-1628)

-- My paternal 9th great grandparents were Hans Ulrich Bär and Barbel Wyess.

Hans Ulrich Bär was born about 1584, and died about 1628. Hans Ulrich Bär was 1st married to Barbel Wyss who was born about 1584 and died about 1617. Hans I then married Barbel Wydler.

Hans Ulrich Bär children with Barbel Wyss:

i. Hans Bär who was born in 1609 and died 1686. He married Anna Hufschmid.

Hans Ulrich Bär children with Barbel Wydler:
ii. Hans Jagli Bär who was born about 1617/18 and died 1676.

iii. Ludwig Bär who born about 1627/28 and died 1699.

Hans Bär (1609-1686)

-- My paternal 8th great grandparents were Hans Bär and Anna Hufschmid.

Hans Bär is the grandson of Jochim Bär (1558-1634), and his son Hans Ulrich Bär (1584-1628). This Hans Bär was born 1609 and died in 1686. Hans married Anna Hufschmid who was born about 1610 and died about 1681. Of the children of Hans and Anna, one was named Melchoir Bär. This is the first known use of the name Melchoir Bär, which we suffixed as Melchoir Bär I.

Melchoir Bär I (1643-1719)

-- My paternal 7th great grandparents were Melchoir Bär I and Anna Gross.

Melchoir Bär I was born about 1643 and died before 1719. He married Anna Gross/Grob who was born about 1647/48 and died after 1708. Of the children Melchoir Bär I and Anna had, there was one named Melchoir Bär, who we dubbed Melchoir Bär II.

Melchoir Bär II (1688-1771)

-- My paternal 6th great grandparents were Melchoir Bär II and his 3rd wife, Anna Elisabeth.

This is the first time we see the last name spelled Bahr and Baer, which are from English influences in documents relating to the Bär family's Colonial life. In the mid 19th century the name would change to the present day Barr.

We believe that Melchoir Bär II is our first known Colonial Pennsylvania ancestor. Melchoir Bär II was born about 1688/89 near Ottenbach Canton Zurich Switzerland. Melchoir II and his 3rd wife Anna Elisabeth Abecky are my son’s 1st Colonial Pennsylvania Barr, and 7th generation Bär German ancestor. Melchoir II emigrated with three of his sons in 1743 from the Palatinate area of Zwiebräcken Germany aboard the Ship Phoenix, arriving from Germany to Colonial Philadelphia.

Melchoir Baer II made his home with his son, Melchoir Baer III, until 1762 when Melchoir III sold the homestead to his father. Melchoir II and Melchoir III then moved to what is now Macungie, Macungie Township Lehigh County Pennsylvania.

Then in 1769 Melchoir II sold his homestead to his son John Peter, whom he designates in his will as his chief heir at law. Melchoir II and John Peter were living in 1769 when they signed, Elizabeth making her mark, the deed to their homestead to their son John Peter.

Melchoir Baer II died on October 2nd 1771 in North Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. He was laid to rest on October 4th 1771 at the Schlosser Reform Church, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania.

His estate will Melchoir II mentions, besides his wife Elisabeth and son John Peter, a daughter Elisabeth, and a granddaughter, Maria Turney.

Melchoir Bär II had a will, and in it he writes about eight children, but mentions only two, Jacob and Melchoir III, to whom he makes special bequests, and he gives the special instruction that his children are to be instructed in the Reformed faith.

The executors of the estate, Eve Elisabeth, his wife, Anthony Stabler and Leonard Steininger, encountered considerable difficulty in adjustment of the estate. It is said that some of the money received by the executors was in continental currency, which depreciated in their hands.

In 1790, Jacob Lindeman, in right of his wife, Eve Elisabeth, petitioned the court to appoint John Rornig, of Macungie, and George Kriebel and James Gill, of Upper Milford, to audit the accounts of the executors. It further appears that from a petition dated December 7th 1821, almost forty years after his death, that Melchoir Baer died intestate as to a tract of land in Macungie Township, containing 174 acres, and appraised at $5,610.00; this petition happily contains the names of his children, which were omitted in the will.

What we know is Melchoir Baer II

-- He arrived September 30th 1743 at Philadelphia on the Ship Phoenix.

--&enbsp;His family was from Ottenbach, Canton Zurich, Switzerland.

-- He was a schoolmaster in Zwiebräcken Germany, was married three times, settled in what is now North Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, and had a son Melchoir Baer III who settled in Macungie Township, Lehigh County.

Melchoir Baer II 1st married Elisabeth Gneser on January 13th 1711 in Ottenbach, Canton Zurich, Switzerland. Elisabeth was born in 1689 Ottenbach near Canton Zurich, Switzerland, and died February 18th 1716 at Ottenbach, Canton Zurich, Switzerland.

Children of Melchoir Bahr and Elisabeth Gneser:

i. Melchoir Bär was born October 2nd 1712 in Ottenbach Canton Zurich, Switzerland.

ii. Anna Maria Bär was born 1714 and died 1716/17.

iii. Anna Bär was born 1715 and her death is unknown.

Melchoir Bär II 2nd marriage was to Catharine Widmer who was born on 1688 and died 1725. Melchoir Bär II and Catharine had no children that we could find.

Melchoir Bär II 3rd marraige was with Anna Elisabeth Abecky who was born about 1698 and died about 1775. Melchoir Bär II and Anna Elisabeth had eight children:

iv. Johannes Bär.

v. Christophel Bär.

vi. Phillip Jacob Bär was also known as Jacob Baer.

vii.  Maria Elisabeth Bär was born about 1726, and died about 1801. She had a daughter named Maria Turney.

viii. Anna Barbara Bär was born about 1728.

ix. Maria Christina Bär was born about 1730/31 and died about 1731/32.

x. Johann Peter Bär was born about 1735/36 and died in 1777.

xii. Melchoir Bär III (1726-1773). He married three times.

Melchoir Barr III (1726-1773)

-- My paternal 5th great grandparents were Melchoir Bär II and his 3rd wife, Anna Elisabeth.

Melchoir III was born October 2nd 1726 in Ottenbach Canton Zurich, Switzerland to Melchoir Bär II and his 3rd wife Anna Elisabeth Abecky. Melchoir III came to Philadelphia with his father and uncles from Zwiebräcken in the Palatinate region of Germany. Melchoir III died on February 28th 1773 in Macungie Township Lehigh County, Pennsylvnia. He was buried about March 2nd1773 in a small private cemetery in Upper Milford Reform Church, near Zionsville, Macungie (Magunshie Thal (Macungie Valley)Township Lehigh County, Pennsylvania.

There was issued unto him (Melchoir III) a warrant on November 1st 1749 for two tracts of land situated in Heidelberg Township, Northampton County Pennsylvania. If this 1749 is accurate, then the land warrant would have been issued in Bucks county, which was one of the one of the original counties at the formation of Pennsylvania in 1682.One tract was called "Neglect", bounded and described as the following "...Beginning at a marked Black Oak thence by Peter Baer's land North one hundred and thirteen perches to a post, thence by a line of Marked Trees North seventy-seven Degrees, West eight perches to a stone, thence by Michael Hoffman's land, South fifteen degrees, West two hundred perches to a Post, thence by Peter Kosher's land South thirty-two Degrees, East eighty perches to a post, thence by vacant land and Peter Baer's land North forty Degrees, East one hundred and sixty-four perches to the place of beginning containing one hundred and forty-four acres and three-quarters and an allowance of six acres for roads...".

The second tract "Quiet Enjoyment" surveyed at the same time contained fifty-four acres and was bounded by Jacob Thinkey's land and other vacant tracts. The purchase price for these two tracts containing 199 acres and 4.0 perches was thirty pounds, nineteen shillings and six pence. In 1762 Melchoir Baer, Jr. sold seventy acres of this original tract to his father, Melchoir Baer, Sr., for the sum of sixty pounds. From the deed of Melchoir Baer, Sr., to his son, John Peter, dated August 3rd 1769, it appears that Melchoir Baer, Sr., purchased all of the above described tracts from his son, Melchoir, Jr., for in it the identical tracts called for in the original survey are transferred to his son John Peter Baer, of Heidelberg township, for the consideration of natural love and affection and the sum of one hundred pounds. The sale by Melchoir Baer, Jr., to Melchoir Baer, Sr., is witnessed to by Christopher Baer, George Steininger and Heinrich Schlebach, and that from Melchoir Baer, Sr., to his son, John Peter, by Heinrich Finck and Heinrich Reinhart.

There is a photo of Melchoir III's homestead and of his headstone.

Melchoir III was married twice.

Melchoir Baer III 1st wife was Christina Niederhauser, who was born about 1717 near Bern Switzerland. Melchoir and Christina married June 3rd 1738 probably in Zwiebräcken Germany. Christina death is unknown, but it would have been about 1762 or 1763.

Together Melchoir III and his first wife Cristina had five daughters.

i. Elisabeth Catharine Baer married Lorentz Kern. Lorentz had died prior to the date of the petition. Elisabeth and Lorentz had three children: Henry, Margareth, and Elisabeth who married John Jacoby. Several grand-children were issued to Magdalena who was married to Mr. Bittenbender. Lorentz Kern is said to have moved to York County.

ii. Regina Baer married Jacob Haman. Regina died prior to the petition of 1821.

iii. Anna Margaret Baer was born on December 11th 1756 and died August 5th 1837. She married Philip Christman.

iv. Barbara Baer was born March 13th 1760, and died June 28th 1845. She married Nicholas Stabler (June 1752 to September 24th 1930), the ancestor of most of the Stahler's of Milford, Macungie and Allentown.

v. Susanna Baer was born January 1st 1762 and died January 1th 1846), and she married Philip Walter.

Melchoir Baer III married his 2nd wife, Eva Elizabeth Christman, about 1763. Eva was the sister of his daughter, Anna Margaret Baer's husband, Philip Christman. Eva Elizabeth was born about 1738, and the year of her death is unknown. It was said Eva was considerable younger (16 years) than Melchoir III. She was the daughter of Jacob and Eva Margaret Christman of Lynn Township, Lehigh County Pennsylvania.

--  Jacob Christman died about 1761. Jacob and Eva Christman had seven children: Eva Elizabeth, the wife of Melchoir Baer III, George, Jacob, Susanna, John, Philip, and Henry. Philip Christman (son of Jacob and Eva Margaret Christman) was a farmer near Sigmund's Furnace in Upper Milford Township, Lehigh County. Later, he moved to Lower Macungie , where he established the Christman Mill

Melchoir III and his 2nd wife Eva Elizabeth Christman had four children.

i. Melchoir Baer IV was born February 19th 1765. On June 14th 1789 he married Catharine Desch. He settled in Macungie Lehigh County, and had several large farms. He died December 29th 1850. Melchoir IV and Catherine had ten children.

ii. Eva Elisabeth Baer was born July 5th 1771, and died June 29th 1857. She married Jacob Lindeman, and lived near Kreidersville, Northampton County. They had seven children: George, Jacob, Samuel, Polly, Elisabeth, Lydia, and Henry - born in 1775. Henry died the same year, and was buried aside his father.

iii. Henry Baer was born September 3rd 1773 near Upper Milford Township, Lehigh County Pennsylvania. He died 1773 and was buried in the Upper Milford Reform Church. This child appears to have been born after the death of Melchoir III, who died in February 1773. Melchoir's will makes no mention of Henry, who appears to have died shortly after his birth.

iv. Jacob Baer (1768-1858)

Jacob Baer (1768-1858)

-- My paternal 4th great grandparents were Jacob Baer.

Jacob Baer was born near Macungie Lehigh County Pennsylvania, where he followed the trade of carpet weaver. He died about 1858, aged upwards of eighty years. He is buried at Zionsville. Not much is known about Jacob, or of his wife and children. We do know that they had a son named Manasses.

Manasses Baer (1826-1903)

-- My paternal 3rd great grandparents were Manasses Baer and Lucetta Niederauer.

Manasses was born near Macungie, March 17th 1826. He was the grandson of Melchoir Bär III, and his 2nd wife Eva Elizabeth Christman. Manasses followed the shoemaking trade for some years, whereupon he turned to farming in Upper Milford Township. Two years previous to the building of the Perkiomen Railroad he sold his farm and bought a farm in York County, whither he moved and died at Newberrytown, York County Pennsylvania in 1903. While in York County he also followed the drover business and had served as school director. He was a Lutheran.

Manasses was married to Lucetta Niederauer, who was born about 1840 and died March 1900, aged 76 years. Lucetta's father was Jacob Niederauer who was born 1792 in Upper Milford Township Pennsylvania. Jacob died in 1850, and was buried at sea. Jacob had only one other child, Caroline who died unmarried. This is about the same time the spelling of this family's name changed from "Baer" to its present form "Barr"

Mannasses and Lucetta Baer had these children:

i. Susan Baer was the wife of James Gaumer of Macungie Township Lehigh County.

ii. Sarah Baer was the wife of Samuel Mack from Philadelphia.

iii. Mary Baer was the wife of Robert Byers from Newberrytown York County.

iv. Lydia Baer was the wife of Robert Shilly from Newberrytown.

v. Stephen Baer was married to Emma Friel from Philadelphia.

vi. Rebecca Baer was the wife of William Ebele from Newberrytown.

vii. Henry Baer lived in Pottstown Pennsylvania.

viii. William Baer - deceased.

x. Joseph Baer (1852-19)

Joseph Baer (1852-19)

-- My paternal 2nd great grandparents were Joseph Baer and his 1st wife, Mary Wasser.

Joseph was born on March 14th 1852 to Manasses Baer, and Lucetta Baer, in the area of Vera Cruz, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. With this generation, the spelling of the name was changed from Baer to Barr, due to the insistence of an English schoolteacher. Joseph attended the public schools to about sixteen, worked two years on his Mannasses's farm. In 1870 he learned the carpenter trade, at which he worked for five years and thereupon for same time at machinist trade. Afterwards for about five years he was an engineer, then boss at the Emaus furnace for two years. Moving to Pottstown, he built the rolling mill for Hope Iron Company and when they sold their plant. He was employed by the Warwick Iron Company as chief engineer. Returning to Emaus, he prepared plans and constructed the Emaus Pipe Foundry, returning again to Pottstown, he built the Ellis-Lessig Iron Mills Company, Montgomery County Pennsylvania.

Coming to Allentown Pennsylvania, on August 14th 1888, he became interested in the cement business, being associated with the Lehigh Portland Cement Company. He is a member of the Lutheran Church, Republican in politics, member of 100 F Unity Encampment and Rebekah, No. 72, 100 F and B. P.0.E. Joseph married Mary Wasser (died in 1900, aged 42 years), a daughter of James and Anna Wasser in 1869. After Mary died Joseph married Aretta Traver, daughter of Jacob and Sarah (Seitzinger) Traver on Sept. 9th 1903. They had no children.

This is a photo of Joseph Barr holding my father, Bob Graham. Also in the photo is Joseph's son Harvey Barr and his wife Sarah Ellis. Also, here is a photo of Joseph Barr and Aretta Traver.

Together Joseph Barr and Mary Wasser had seven children.

vii. Joseph Robert Barr was born at Pottstown, September 5th 1890. He was educated in the public schools and later was graduated from Nazareth Hall (1907) He then became and electrician and chemist for the Lehigh Portland Cement Company, serving for about four and a half years, when Mr. Bachman and himself began their present business. He was married, September 15th 1910, to Laura Wirthlin, a daughter of Frank and Laura (Wetzel) Wirthlin, of Cincinnati, Ohio.

There is one photo that we know of, that has my great grandfather Harvey Barr with his sister.

-- Written on the front of the photo, Aunt Sadie, Sarah and Harvey Barr, Florence Emmory, Cousin. The note was written by Harvey and Sarah Barr's daughter Ruth Barr-Graham.

Harvey's father, Joseph Barr work with the local Iron foundries. One foundry in particular, may have been the Ellis Lessig Steel and Iron Company, which was started in 1879 by William S. Ellis, and Joshua and George Lessig. The mill sat on 14 acres in Pottstown, between the Reading Railroad and the Schuylkill River, upstream from the mouth of the Manatawny Creek. By 1912, William S. Ellis and George B. Lessig were both deceased.

Harvey's father, Joseph Barr; "...for about five years he was an engineer, then boss at the Emaus furnace for two years.
